Lilly's chocolate

The Best Chocolate for Keto – Lily’s Chocolate Bars

Chocolate on Keto?

Chocolate is a non-negotiable for many people. Luckily, chocolate doesn’t have to be sacrificed when cutting carbs from your diet. Lily’s chocolate bars, for example, are typically around 4 net carbs for half of the bar, with no added sugar. A similar chocolate bar that uses regular sugar can easily have 20 grams of carbs or more.

Finding low-carb alternatives to traditionally high-carb foods is key to making a keto lifestyle sustainable. The easiest substitution for a high sugar chocolate bar would be dark chocolate that is at least 85% cacao. These bars tend to have the lowest amount of sugar, but they can taste bitter and be difficult to transition to. Alternatively, products like Lily’s chocolate bars, or Choczero keto bark are sweetened with keto-friendly sweeteners and will taste more like a traditional chocolate bar.

Whether you are transitioning into a keto lifestyle, or you’ve been eating low carb for years, these chocolate bar alternatives can be enjoyed while keeping you on track to reach your health and fitness goals. Below are several of the best alternatives to traditional chocolate bars. Some, like Lily’s chocolate, can be found in stores. Others are only available online but may be found in stores in the future as the company grows.

Lily’s Sweets makes chocolate bars that have no added sugar and are sweetened with stevia and erythritol. The products also have inulin and dextrin in them, which are two naturally occurring plant fibers. If you are not a fan of very dark chocolate, a Lily’s bar is perfect. They come very close to a traditional chocolate bar, without the ridiculous amounts of sugar.

Lily’s Sweets also offers sugar free chocolate chips and baking chocolate. These are great to use in baking recipes. Also, some of the chocolate chips would be great in a low-carb trail mix.

If you are looking for more than just a chocolate bar, Lily’s Sweets also has peanut butter cups, chocolate covered peanuts, and chocolate covered almonds in both milk and dark chocolate.

All of their products are gluten-free, non-GMO, and fair trade certified. Each chocolate bar has approximately 2 servings and you can find them online, on Amazon, or in many grocery stores.

This is a good alternative to Lily’s Sweets if you do not like the bitter taste of stevia. Their site markets the bar as a weight loss tool because it is an alternative to the traditional sugar-filled candy bar. However, it is important to make sure that you are still feeling optimal and getting results that you want with any keto sweets that are added to your diet. Lakanto Chocolate

Lakanto is primarily known for their monk fruit sweeteners. The powdered and granular forms are combinations of erythritol and monk fruit. They also sell liquid monk fruit, syrups, baking mixes, and chocolate bars.

The chocolate bars are available in Almond, Original, and Original with Cacao Nibs. Each bar is sweetened with their Lakanto sweetener, which is a proprietary blend of erythritol and monk fruit extract. There is added fiber in the form of vegetable fiber. According to their website, the fibers are from non-GMO corn and tapioca. All of the chocolate bars are 55% cacao, which is on the lighter end for most keto-friendly chocolate bars.

The bars all have a high total carb count, but nearly half of the total carbs come from the erythritol, which is undigested by the body. However, the high amount of fiber and erythritol can cause GI distress. Keep this is mind before diving into an entire box of their chocolate bars.

The bars are available online, but with a minimum purchase of 8 bars. Each bar is 3oz, and the cost breaks down to almost $9 per bar. With such a high price tag, it may be worth seeking these out in stores first. Many of their other products are sold in health food stores in the United States, like Sprouts, so you may have luck finding these as well.

All of their chocolate bars are gluten-free, vegan, and keto-friendly.

Choczero

Choczero offers a wide variety of sugar-free chocolates and syrups. All of their products are gluten free, soy free, and sugar alcohol free. The chocolate is sweetened with monk fruit. As a result, it will not have a bitter aftertaste of stevia or cause GI distress from erythritol. All products use non-GMO soluble corn fiber, which is listed as fiber on the nutrition label and can be subtracted from the total carb count.

I received my first Choczero product in a Keto Krate, which is a monthly subscription box filled with different keto snacks. It was a great way for me to discover the brand and all of their products. Check out my guide to the best snack boxes on keto.

Other Chocolate Bars

There are several dark chocolate bars that can be easily found in the candy aisle of the grocery store. It is best to find chocolate that is 85% cacao or higher. If this is not sweet enough for your tastes, you may want to try one of the sugar-free alternatives like Lily’s, Choczero, or Lakanto. They have the benefit of being sweeter without the added sugar.

All other grocery store chocolate that is not 100% cacao will have some form of sugar in the ingredients. Depending on how dark the bar is, the amount of sugar will be more or less. That being said, check the labels on each bar to see how much sugar is in an entire serving. It may surprise you to find a 90% cacao bar that has more sugar than an 85%!

Usually, the bars that are higher in fat will have a lower carb count. Make sure to keep an eye on how much a single serving of a bar is. Most are ½ of the bar, but some may only be ⅓, and others can be the entire bar.

These are a few options that are available in most grocery stores. They can also be found in some gas stations or convenience stores which make them an easy treat to grab on the go as an alternative to a Snickers bar.

Endangered Species can be found in many grocery stores. The 88% dark chocolate bar has the lowest amount of carbs of all of the Endangered Species chocolate bars. One serving is one ounce, which is 1/3 of a bar.

Alter Eco chocolate can be found in many grocery stores. The Dark Blackout bar is 85% cacao. One serving is 40g, or 1/2 of a bar. The bar is much higher in fat than other chocolate bars, and there are only 6 grams of net carbs per serving.

Lindt chocolate can be found in many grocery stores. The Excellence Dark Chocolate bar is 90% cacao. One serving is 40g, or 2/5 of a bar. The bar is much higher in fat than other chocolate bars, and there are only 7 grams of net carbs per serving.

Baker’s chocolate is not for everyone. It is bitter and lacks any sweetness. However, I have found that I enjoy the taste of unsweetened baker’s chocolate. This is not something I would have said years ago. It has taken time for my palate to adjust. If I want to add some sweetness, I may have it with a small bowl of berries, or top a piece with some pili nut butter. I love having unsweetened baker’s chocolate as a dessert because it is difficult to overeat and it satisfies my sweet tooth.

Homemade Chocolate Bars

Homemade chocolate bars are surprisingly easy to make. They’re great because you can control the sweetness of the bar, and they’re much cheaper than buying sugar-free chocolate bars.

This one from Keto Connect uses cacao butter, baker’s chocolate, coconut oil, and sweetener with only 1 net carb per serving.

What to Avoid

Avoid candies and chocolates with maltitol or IMO fiber. These do not go undigested in the body completely, so the carbs cannot be fully subtracted. Check out my guide to sweeteners for more information on keto friendly sweeteners.
